There’s a lot to remember when you’re moving. Check this moving out checklist to make sure you don’t forget anything!

  • Two Months Before You Move:

    • Make a booking with a moving company
    • Request time off from your job for the move, if needed
    • Start the packing process by sorting through items, making piles for things you want to sell, give away, and throw away
  • Six Weeks Before You Move

    • Order packing materials if needed
    • Take photos of fragile, expensive items like electronics
    • Make home repairs, especially if you live in an apartment and you need your deposit back
  • Four Weeks Before You Move

    • Get information about updating various registrations at your new location
    • Enroll your kids in their new school if needed
    • Update homeowners or renter’s insurance, medical insurance, and car insurance
  • Two Weeks Before You Move

    • Start packing in earnest. Start with the items you use least like books, movies, and kitchen gadgets you don’t need daily.
    • Back up your computer. A cloud backup and a physical backup are both recommended just in case!
    • Update your address with any subscriptions you have.
  • One Week Before Moving

    • Donate unopened food.  We partner with Moving for Hunger to help donate non-perishables to people in need.
    • Pack everything and make sure to pack a separate bag with a few changes of clothes and essential documents.
    • Prepare cash to tip your movers!
  • On Moving Day

    • Send kids to a babysitter or family member’s house
    • Keep pets crated or at doggy day care. Spooked animals may run away.
    • Clean up after the movers have left to prepare the space for the next occupant.

Now you’re ready to enjoy your new home! This is just a basic checklist for moving into a new home. You may want to make your own to make sure you get everything done that is specific to your exact move.

For example, a moving to a new state checklist may include different things than a moving into a first house checklist. And those will be different from a moving to across country checklist. Each of those situations have their own little nuances that you will need to pay attention to. A list to check items off of makes sure that you will not forget anything!

A great way to make sure that everything is done on moving day is to work with a team of professional movers. We will make sure your list is complete whether it is a moving into first apartment checklist or a general moving packing checklist.
