Best Storage Containers for Moving

What Are Moving Storage Containers?

Sometimes called “pods,” these are containers that allow you to pack everything up into a storage container for moving at home. This then gets put onto a truck and can get shipped anywhere that you need it to go. It is an easy way to move. The moving company will drop off the storage unit at your current home. Then, you can pack it. Schedule your pickup when you are ready, and they will come to get it and bring it to your new location. Some pod storage companies let you keep your storage container for however long you need it. Others give you a time limit of a few days for packing.

Some moving and storage containers are made of steel, aluminum, wood, or a combination of these materials. Steel and aluminum are weatherproof. Wooden pods need to have a weatherproof cover included with the rental in case of rain or snow.

There are different sizes of containers for rent. The most common sizes are 12 feet, 16 feet, and 20 feet. The smaller sizes are best for a studio or one-bedroom apartment. Medium-sized containers work for 2 bedroom homes or small three bedrooms. Larger sizes work well for larger homes. You can always rent multiple containers if you have an exceptionally large moving job.

Can I Pack My Own?

You can pack your own storage pod if you want, but you can also hire professionals to make it a full-service move. That way, people with proper training will pack everything in such a way as to minimize damage during the long haul once it’s all packed up. You can also hire the moving team to unpack everything on the other end as well. Some people prefer to do everything themselves, while others would rather have someone else do it so they can focus on work and their family.

What to Avoid Packing

In general, you should avoid putting anything extremely valuable or irreplaceable in your long-distance moving storage container. You should also not pack plants or perishable food in there. There are other materials that are considered hazardous. Some of them are common household things like nail polish remover, fire extinguishers, and pool chemicals. None of these should go inside of your container.
