“DIY” Military Moves

The government offers you a few different options for your military move. The first option is to have them take care of everything. The Department of Defense arranges with special military moving companies to have your belongings delivered to your new home.

However many prefer the “DIY” option which allows you to have more control over your move. You get to select and arrange your moving services and will get reimbursed by the Department of Defense for 95% of what they would have paid their own military movers. This is also called a PPM or personally procured move.

The third option is a mixture of both of these. This is great for people who have special items they are particularly worried about or those who simply want to have some say in their move but also want to have some things simply taken care of.

How to Get Reimbursed for Your Military Move

Once your move is over you’ll want to get reimbursed. Some military families even make a little money on their moves. Make sure to keep your receipts for everything related to the move, and have copies of your applications to move and travel. Once you’ve arrived, you typically have about 6 weeks to file for reimbursement.
